The short answer: this free Certified Sommelier practice test has 40 questions at the level of the Court of Master Sommeliers' Certified Sommelier exam, each with the answer and a short explanation. Play it as a timed test, or read it through below.

I passed my Certified Sommelier exam in 2014. The jump from the Introductory is real: the theory goes one step deeper everywhere, from Burgundy's villages to the Champagne press. These questions train that depth. They are not real exam questions, and nobody can give you those.

The Certified Sommelier exam in 2026

  • Europe: a theory paper of 40 multiple-choice and short-answer questions, a blind tasting of two wines on the Court's tasting grid, and a practical service exam. You need 60% in each part, passed together.
  • Americas: a theory exam of 45 questions in 38 minutes (multiple choice, short answer, simple math and matching), a blind tasting of four wines, and service. 60% on every section, in one sitting.
  • You need the Introductory first. In Europe you then have three years to take the Certified, and the Court asks for at least ten weeks of pre-study.

Always check the latest details with your Court before you book. The full theory guide, region by region, is in the Certified Sommelier theory exam, and the whole path in how to become a Certified Sommelier.
