The Loire is long, but at Level 1 it gets simple once you split it into four parts, west to east: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine and the Centre. Each part has its grape. These 15 questions follow that river map. They are practice questions, not real exam questions.

  • Answer all 15 first, on paper. Then open the answers.
  • 12 or more: you know the Loire. 9–11: a pass, with gaps to close. Under 9: go back to the four parts and their grapes.

Questions people ask

What are the main grapes of the Loire Valley?

Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet), Chenin Blanc (Anjou and Touraine), Sauvignon Blanc (Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Touraine) and Cabernet Franc for reds. Pinot Noir and Gamay also appear.

Is Pouilly-Fumé the same as Pouilly-Fuissé?

No. Pouilly-Fumé is Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire. Pouilly-Fuissé is Chardonnay from the Mâconnais in Burgundy. Exam writers love this pair.

Is Loire wine sweet or dry?

Both. Muscadet, Sancerre and Savennières are dry. Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume and some Vouvray are sweet. With Chenin Blanc, check the label.

How much Loire do I need for Level 1?

The four parts of the river, their main grapes, the key appellations above and the styles they make. Detailed soils and producers come later, at Certified.
