The short answer: the best fun wine labels borrow the words already on real wine labels (vintage, reserve, grand cru, old vines, late harvest) and point them at the person you are giving the bottle to. A name, a date and one good line is enough. Here are ideas by occasion, then how to make the label look right.
A custom label turns a good bottle into a gift nobody else could give. It is the feeling that people remember, not the price.
Steal from real wine labels
Wine labels have their own vocabulary, and it is full of jokes waiting to happen. Each of these words means something real, which is why the joke lands:
| Wine word | What it really means | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage | The year the grapes were picked | A birth year, a wedding year, "Vintage 1986" |
| Old Vines (Vieilles Vignes) | Wine from older vines; rarely defined by law | A big birthday, with love |
| Late Harvest | Grapes left on the vine to ripen longer | A retirement, or a late bloomer |
| Grand Cru | The top vineyards of a region | Best friends, the best team |
| Reserve | A wine held back or aged longer | Something saved for a special day |
| Blanc de Blancs | White wine from white grapes only | Two brides |
| Assemblage / Blend | Wines combined into one | A wedding, a new family |
| Estate Bottled | Grown and bottled on the property | A housewarming |
| Aged in Oak | Matured in oak barrels | A 50th birthday, or a dad joke |

Wedding and engagement labels
- "Grand Cru [names], Vintage [year]" with the wedding date on the back. Classic and elegant.
- "A Blend of Two" or "Assemblage [surname] & [surname]": the couple as a cuvée.
- "Reserve: open on our first anniversary": a bottle for the couple to keep. Choose a wine that can age, such as a vintage Champagne, a good Bordeaux or a Riesling.
- Table labels: a small label with each table's name or number, for the wine on the tables.
For the engagement bottle itself, see the Champagne engagement gift.
Birthday labels
- "Vintage [birth year]: aged to perfection": the most popular for a reason.
- "Old Vines, still producing" for a big birthday, if your friend has a sense of humour.
- A mock tasting note: "Notes of good stories and questionable decisions. Long finish. Best enjoyed with friends."
- The real thing: for a newborn, a bottle from the birth year to open at 18 or 21. Choose a wine built to age, such as vintage Port or a great Riesling, and keep it somewhere cool and dark.
Housewarming, thank-you and holiday labels
- Housewarming: "Estate Bottled at [street name]" or "Château [surname], First Vintage".
- Thank you: "Grand Cru Colleague" or "Reserve Selection, for the best neighbours".
- Retirement: "Late Harvest: worth the wait".
- Holidays: "Cuvée Family Dinner: pairs with arguments about politics", or a label with everyone's names around the table.
- Corporate gifts: keep it simple: the company logo, the year, one line of thanks. Funny labels and clients are a risk.
Funny wine label lines
- "Appellation Kitchen Contrôlée."
- "Serve at room temperature, or whatever the room is."
- "Decant for 30 minutes, or don't. We won't tell."
- "Single vineyard. Single person. Single glass… perhaps."
- "Contains sulfites and opinions."
- "Best before: tonight."
Keep the joke kind, and keep it about the person, not about drinking a lot.
Make it look good on the bottle
- Measure first. Bottle shapes differ: a Bordeaux bottle has high shoulders and a straight body, a Burgundy bottle slopes. Measure the flat area of the bottle you will use before you design.
- Leave the real label visible. Put your label on the back of the bottle, on the neck, or as a band, so guests can still see what wine they are drinking. A sommelier always wants to read the producer and the vintage.
- Use waterproof paper or vinyl if the bottle will sit in an ice bucket. Ordinary paper peels off in minutes.
- For Champagne, think neck tags and wraps. Champagne bottles are wide, curved and usually served wet from the bucket.
- One idea per label. A name, a date, one line. Lots of space looks expensive; crowded looks homemade.
- Good wine first. The label makes people smile. The wine is what they remember.
Two honest rules
- Don't add claims that aren't true. No vegan, organic, award or "Grand Cru" marks that look official on a wine that doesn't have them, unless it is clearly a joke between friends. See what makes a wine vegan.
- A gift label is decoration, not a wine label. If you ever sell wine, the label must follow wine-labelling law (in the US, labels are approved by the TTB), and you can't simply cover a producer's label.

Questions people ask
What should I write on a custom wine label?
A name, a date and one line. Wine words such as vintage, reserve, old vines and grand cru make easy, clever wording.
Can I put my own label on a bottle of wine?
For a personal gift, yes. Put it on the back or the neck so the real label stays readable. Selling wine with a new label is a different matter and must follow wine-labelling law.
How do I stop a wine label peeling in an ice bucket?
Print on waterproof label paper or vinyl, or use a neck tag that stays above the water.
What is a good wine to give with a birth-year label?
For a bottle to open years later, choose a wine that ages, such as vintage Port, a fine Riesling or a classed-growth Bordeaux, and keep it cool and dark.
